Rescuing the
River

Year

2022

Location

Little Island, NYC

Rescuing the River is an outdoor exhibit looking to educate about the Hudson River’s ecosystem, toxic history, and future. The subject matter is serious and can be disheartening, but the exhibit counteracts this by highlighting improvements being made. It also features the groups making these changes, like the Billion Oyster project. Visitors will be lead through the space via a scavenger hunt which encourages them to see all of the sections throughout the park.

Materiality is very important to this exhibit and many displays are created from recycled plastics, reclaimed wood, and reclaimed oyster shells to combine natural and manmade materials in an intentional and sustainable way. A vivid palette and interactive elements encourage visitors to see a brighter future for the Hudson River, and shows them ways in which they can take action.
